IBG's exchange destinations
As a student at the Biology Education Centre, you have good opportunities do an exchange period at a wide range of places in the world. Below you will find the places that IBG has agreements with.
IBG has agreements with the following universities.
Austria doesn’t have the same semester periods as we do, but instead a winter and a summer semester.
Offer a large amount of courses given in English within biology. Courses within molecular biology are however not included in our agreement, but might be possible to arrange when the student has arrived. Students can only be admitted for one semester for a start, but at arrival they can apply for an extension and stay for a full academic year.
University of Namur
Courses given in English at advanced level mainly within cell and molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry and ecology. Most courses are offered during the autumn semester.
University of Tartu
Courses given in English in many fields of biology.
ENS de Lyon
The University has a master programme in Bioscience, where the second year is exclusively given in English. Exchange studies within that programme is mostly suitable during the autumn semester. It is however possible to do a degree project during the spring. To be admitted to exchange studies to Lyon, an average of grade 4 is required.
Université Grenoble Alpes
The university offers a large amount of courses in English within structure biology, development biology, neuroscience, immunology, infection biology, microbiology, cancer biology, epigenetics and nano biotechnology. Courses in ecology and biodiversity are given in French.
More information can be found here.
Bachelor courses and first year master courses are given in French. Course catalogue.
Germany doesn’t have the same semester periods as we do, but instead a winter and a summer semester.
Courses given in English at advanced level within cell and molecular biology, immunology, microbiology and neuroscience.
Courses in English in within molecular plant science. Other fields in biology are primarily given in German.
Courses given in English in many fields of biology, but only for master students.
Technische Universität München (TUM)
The school of life science offers a wide range of biology courses (modules) in English. To make it easier for students to navigate, several module packages have been set up. Bachelor students with suitable background are allowed to take master courses.
Basically all biology courses at advanced level are given in English. Courses are offered in Evolution and ecology, Cell and molecular plant biology, Molecular biology and Neurobiology. However only a few bachelor courses are given in English. Bachelor may on the other hand take master courses if they have a suitable background for the course. More information about the exchange and the courses that are offered can be found here.
University of Crete (Panepistimio Kritis)
Four master programmes in biology are given in English. During the exchange you can take courses within molecular biology, biotechnology, plant science, marine biology, ecology and conservation.
For bachelor students, only laboratory and practical courses are given in English. It’s recommended to combine these with the bachelor thesis. As a bachelor student you are not allowed to take master courses.
Università Degli Studi di Trieste
Courses given in English at advanced level in neuroscience, medical biotechnology, global change ecology and functional genomics.
Radboud University Nijmegen
Courses given in English within the whole field of biology. The university has a particularly strong field within microbiology and aquatic biology.
For bachelor students, courses in English are offered during the autumn semester as a 30 credit minor in either Biotechnology, Human evolution or Biodiversity.
At master level, courses in the whole biology field are offered in English, both during autumn and spring semester.
The university offers courses in English in many fields of Biology, both at bachelor and master level. For instance, there is a master programme in Bioinformatics and is therefore a good choice for students studying bioinformatics at UU, but the exchange is suitable for most students within biology.
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
In the autumns, bachelor students are offered to attend a 30 credit minor in either ecology or evolutionary biology. Other fields, such as neuroscience, could also be possible. Apart from this, regular courses in English, in many fields of biology are given throughout the year for both bachelor and master students.
The Universities in Switzerland are not part of the ERASMUS-programme, but as an exchange student, you will receive a scholarship with a similar amount as the ERASMUS grant. The Swedish study finance system CSN won’t however allow students to have the Swiss mobility scholarship at the same time as CSN. As a student, you will need to choose.
Courses given in English within cell biology, plant biology, ecology and evolution.
ETH is one of the highest ranked technical universities in Europe. To be admitted to exchange studies, an average of grade 4 is required. There are courses given in English in many fields of biology and also the possibility to do a degree project within the exchange.
An exchange is only possible for one semester, not a full academic year.
Université de Lausanne
The agreement with Lausanne is primarily for students within the MEME master programme and their master thesis.
Universidad de Barcelona
The faculty of biology offers several master biology courses in English, mostly within genetics and genomics, biotechnology, immunology, biomedicine and neurosciences. At bachelor level most courses are given in Spanish or Catalan. Bachelor students are not allowed to take master courses.
Universidad de Granada
Offers a limited amount of courses given in English in biology. You also have the possibility to choose other courses within the faculty of science. If you have a good knowledge in Spanish (at least level B1), and are able to take some courses given in Spanish, you will have a lot more courses to choose from. The university only offers courses at Bachelor level. It is possible to do a degree project within the exchange, but only at bachelor level. Courses given in English in biology: Course catalogue.
Exchange studies within the ERASMUS frame work will be possible until Spring semester 2023. For exchange studies more than six months, a student visa is required.
University of Edinburgh
Edinburgh offers courses in a wide biological field. However, only undergraduate courses are offered. At Edinburgh it is not possible to do a degree project during the exchange.
Application for the academic year 2023/2024 is open between January 15 and February 15.
For questions and more information for each exchange agreement, contact the Biology coordinator for international mobility, Sofia Thorsélius email@example.com
