IBG works in several ways to stimulate students themselves to create, develop and maintain relevant contacts with work-life. One part of this effort is to help you as a student to find suitable projects for research internships, degree projects, PhD positions, etc. In the project database we publish project offers from academia, corporations and government agencies. We sometimes also announce different career promoting events of a more general nature. The sub page "Want to know more?" below also has permanent links to external resources that may be valuable to help find additional projects, etc.
Some projects are described in English; others in Swedish. The current offers are listed below. Older, archived offers can be found via the link on the right.

PhD student position on reptile diversity and conservation, Montpellier, France and Porto, Portugal
Shortfalls of biodiversity knowledge strongly impede effective conservation, for both species- and areabased strategies. Arid habitats are often perceived as having little conservation value due to their impoverished communities. Yet, these communities are made of many endemic, specialized species with unique adaptations. Many populated arid areas are also degraded due to anthropogenic activities. Arid steppes are even amongst the most threatened habitats in North Africa and the Middle East because their fertile soil make them valuable to agriculture. Here is a three year PhD position meant to study reptile diversity and conservation in North Africa and the Middle East.

Master thesis on the expression and purification of the peripheral membrane protein BAR, KTH
Peripheral membrane proteins, like BAR proteins (often intimately involved in conformational changes of membrane topology), are soluble proteins that bind to membranes. BAR proteins change their conformation upon binding to the membrane. Many of the BAR protein’s functions in cells can be tested and investigated in reconstituted systems. The main focus of this project will be to find the appropriate expression system and purification strategy for it, in order to ultimately/later on be able to reconstitute it into artificial membranes and study its structure/structural transitions by cryoEM.

Master projects on buzz pollinating bees and flower evolution, IEG, UU
During buzz pollination, bees use their powerful thoracic muscles to shake pollen out of flowers, producing an audible sound or “buzz”. Buzz pollination has evolved in 20,000 species of flowering plants, and about half of all bee species. Yet, we still know little about why some bees but not others buzz pollinate, and how evolution has shaped flower and bee characteristics to fine tune buzz pollination. Here are interesting opportunities to do a degree project or possibly a research training or project work (consult with the supervisor!) on the intricacies of buzz pollination and its links to flower evolution. If this sounds interesting to you, please continue reading in the appended pdf!

Master degree project on lymphatic metastasis and its effects on tumor immunity, IMBIM, UU
Lymph nodes are hubs for our adaptive immune response and among other things they are essential for the induction of anti-tumor responses. But lymph nodes are also one of the earliest places where tumors may metastasize. We still do not fully understand which properties in tumor cells facilitate metastasis or how metastasis to the lymph nodes affects their ability to mount anti-tumor responses. Here is a chance for motivated students with interest in experimental cancer models, flow cytometry and imaging to help find answers to some of these intriguing and contradictory observations.
