Gold to this year’s iGEM team for modular biosensor
Team iGEM Uppsala 2020. Foto/bild: iGEM Uppsala For the 10th consecutive year, the iGEM Uppsala team has been awarded gold in the iGEM Competition. This year’s entry NANOFLEX is a modular biosensor that could be adapted to detect and diagnose a variety of things at the cell level.

Master student awarded first prize at E-LAB Joint Event in Poland
Karthik Rajasekar, second year student from Master’s in Applied Biotechnology, Uppsala University was awarded the 1st Prize in a competition organized by EIT Health at the Medical University of Lodz, Poland. He managed not only to find solutions to various problems with a non-functioning medical device and to fix the prototype, but also to make the device functional at the fastest time.

Students get to try out advanced bioprocess technologies at the Testa Center
During the spring semester, groups of students from Uppsala University had the chance to utilise the Testa Center at GE Healthcare’s facility as part of their courses. The students spent their last lab day of the course Protein Biotechnology purifying proteins and gave the innovation centre a big tick of approval.

Life science degree from Uppsala receives high ranking
The magazine CEO world has ranked the top 50 universities for a life science degree (where biology is a part). Uppsala is ranked 35, before King's College London and the University of Tokyo among others.

Best student presentations at The Student Conference in Science and Technology 2016
The Student Conference in Science and Technology 2016 was held at EBC October 5th. Winner of best student presentations was Sara Lundsten and Sifra Bijl.

Scanning of written and corrected exams
From October autumn 2016 all exams, written in examination halls, at the Biology Education Centre will be scanned by the Studentservice-Ångström.

Environmental Science students in public radio Gotland
Students of Environmental Science at Campus Gotland, Julia John and Robin Andersson were interviewed in Swedish Public Radio Gotland where they spoke about the climate and what we can do as individuals.

Uppsala Climate Month
November is Uppsala Climate Month, with a large number of interesting lectures and events. All this will lead up to the big climate conference COP21 in Paris in December.

Gold medal to Uppsala IGEM 2015
The Uppsala team in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition won a gold medal for Quality in the Environment category at this year’s competition. The Uppsala team was top 4 out of 33 teams from all around the world.

Prize for Best Student Presentation at the Science Conference 2015
Three students were awarded the prize for Best Student Presentations at the Science Conference 2015. The three students were Tor Hansson Frank, Julia Krüper, and Celine-Lea Halioua-Haubold.

Markus Hiltunen, an IBG student, has been interviewed on mushrooms and their ability to mate with themselves via a parasexual cycle.

New temporary study director
Katariina Kiviniemi Birgersson is from now on acting study director at the Biology Education Centre. She is in the process of familiarizing herself with the new duties.

New IBG web
IBG was the first department within the Faculty of Science and Technology to launch the new web. All department within TekNat will launch their new web sites befor 31 May 2015, and we have worked together for a common structure to make things easier for people moving between sites. Graduation ceremonies
There will be two different graduation ceremonies for the master students at IBG. The Uppsala University graduation ceremony for all students at Uppsala University (3 June) and The Biology Education Centre graduation ceremony at EBC (11 June). As student in one of our master programmes (biology, biotechnology and bioinformatics) you are welcome to join both and we really hope that you book 11 June to join in our festive Valedictory ceremony.
